Visiting Runnymede, Egham, Surrey

Updated: Feb 8, 2019

Runnymede, known for it's connections to the Magna Carta, is situated in Egham, Surrey on the outskirts of Windsor, Berkshire and we visit regularly. There is plenty to do which is all closely located to one another. There is a pay and display car park at the Runnymede Pleasure Ground and they offer an hourly and an all day car park rate.

You can take a stroll alongside the River Thames with an opportunity to watch the wildlife and boats. If you walk along the river (heading towards the Runnymede Hotel) you will find the Bell Weir Lock perfect for the inquisitive mind!

The Runnymede Pleasure Park has a paddling pool (open in the summer), go karts, bouncy castle (open in warmer months), play park and a large open green space - perfect for picnics when it's warm enough. You can also catch one of the French Brothers River Boats on the Thames from Runnymede. There is a statue of Queen Elizabeth II which was unveiled in 2015 as part of the Magna Carta 800th celebrations.

As alluded to earlier in this blog, Runnymede is an historic place. In 1215 King John sealed the Magna Carta (Latin for the Great Charter) in Runnymede. You can also visit the National Trust at Runnymede, which is down the road from the Runnymede Pleasure Park, you may want to take the car to get there but could also walk along the river.

If you fancy grabbing a bite to eat or an ice cream whilst you are at Runnymede there are several choices depending on what you are looking for, these include The Runnymede cafe and kiosk (Runnymede Pleasure Ground), The Runnymede Hotel and The National Trust Tearooms. Windsor Farm Shop and Cafe also isn't too far from Runnymede via car.

Runnymede is a lovely day or half day out and even better when the weather is nice, but it can get busy a peak times.

*We visit Runnymede as a family and have a lovely day. We haven't used all the attractions or eaten at everywhere mentioned in the blog. Check opening times before travelling. Views are my own. Please click to view the Berkshire Mummies disclaimer.*
